how you can help
Over the last 10 months, we have worked tirelessly to try and hold Tim Whitaker and The New Evangelicals accountable privately.
Now, we need your help to do it in the public spaces, where this misconduct can no longer hide from the light, and the community is protected from further harm.
What is truly a better way forward?
The deconstruction community already understands that evangelicals spaces have not exemplified transparency and accountability. That’s why many of us left them behind.
We often look to those who have the courage and platform to call these spiritual abuses out for what they are. That’s why many of us flocked to TNE and other deconstruction accounts where we have felt seen and heard.
But yet again, we see systemic failures and power structures get in the way of true accountability. It’s painful to reckon with this reality. TNE Reckoning would like to remind all of us that WE ALL are the advocates we’ve been waiting for: you, us, and all the other members trying to build new paths ahead.
So, in light of TNE’s lack of transparency and action, we would like the public's help in demanding the following actions:
Tim Whitaker to be removed as TNE’s Executive Director and de-platformed by the organization for a meaningful period of time, subject to the standards he has expressed for other abusive Christian leaders. NOTE: While this goes a step beyond the recommendations of GRACE, we also have enough firsthand knowledge and industry experience to believe this step is necessary to safeguard the future of the organization.
A restructuring of its Board Of Directors to include:
Diverse members with prior board experience and expertise at both large and small nonprofits.
Members who are not part of the TNE community and/or do not have a history as close friends, followers, or fans of Tim and TNE on social media.
At least one member who is an unbiased, trained trauma-informed expert, especially because TNE’s work is aimed at people who’ve often experienced religious trauma and abuse.
The creation of equitable policies and procedures that protect future volunteers, contractors, employees, and vendors from similar experiences with TNE.
Immediate action to remedy the grievances, findings of the report, and provide tangible support to the victim and witnesses.
Release of the report on TNE platforms and directly to their donors, as well as necessary public and private statements of unequivocal apology to the victim, witnesses, and community.
Build and release a comprehensive plan to correct and rebuild TNE.
Your voices can create the change we need to see: Email the TNE board and comment on TNE social accounts in fact-based, non-dehumanizing ways.
Please know we are committed to ongoing transparency, and will be posting updates on our social accounts as we can.
How you can help
2. speak out
TNE has taught its community to advocate for accountability. Now, it’s time to encourage that from their leadership through good-faith advocacy and conversation. See our list of actionable steps for TNE HERE.
3. care for each other
The deconstruction community has witnessed countless instances of misbehavior and leadership abuse. It deeply hurts us all. Take time to care for yourself and each other.
